Olivia stayed the entire night by Axelâs body, which was now cold, hard, and tinged the blueish-white of death. She clutched his hands and in the thin veil between awake and asleep she could have sworn a few times she felt his fingers twitch, but when the sun rose over the horizon and hit her face she knew it had not been true. Even in the warmth of the summer sun Axelâs face was ashen white and his fingers were so stiff they couldnât be bent.
The entire night she had huddled in on herself with no shelter, no fire for light, no food though she couldnât have eaten anyway, and no water. It was the water that got her to her feet because she knew she wouldnât last long without it. But did she even want to last anymore? In what would be deemed the most horrible two days of her entire life she lost her mother and her boyfriend, her entire future in one fell swoop. Was there a way to come back from the horrors sheâd seen and endured? For the briefest of seconds she considered ending it all right then and there, laying down next to Axel and dying beside him. But then she remembered theyâd taken his sword and tossed her bat. She had nothing, no one. She was alone and soon she would be desperate and alone.
Though she pushed herself up onto her feet she remained crouched next to Axel, finding it impossible to let go of his hand knowing she had to leave him there on the bed of leaves in the woods. Her mind could not allow itself to wander and think of what would happen to him there. If she had the tools, the time, the strength, she would bury him but she had none of those things. She kissed the back of his hard cold hand and stood, turning away to face the sun and let it warm the coldness inside her that wanted to take over.
âGoodbye, Axel,â she said beneath her breath, as if physical pain ensued from the very words she spoke.
She took a deep breath and let it burst out from her lips as one foot moved in front of the other. Even though it had been hectic and dark, she was sure of the direction the man had thrown her bat so she started there. Her eyes roamed the woods diligently, though the rest of her wanted to give up. How was she supposed to spot a natural wood bat amongst all the fallen tree branches and roots? Just then her foot kicked something buried beneath a rustle of leaves and dead grass that sounded different from the other bits of trees. She knelt down and uncovered her bat, her lucky bat that had once belonged to the mother sheâd witnessed ripped to pieces, the mother who sacrificed herself so she and Axel could live just to have him die the very next day. Cradled in her hands as gently as if it were a newborn baby, Olivia let the tears flow down her cheeks in torrents.
